NGSS Assessments
State Level Assessment (CA Science Test, or "CAST")
Quick Facts:
Integrated into the existing testing system (CAASPP)
Field Test in 2017-2018, then operational in 2018-2019.
Grades tested: 5th Grade, 8th Grade, and District-choice of grade level(s) for High School
Even though students took science tests in the past at 5th and 8th grades, CAST is significantly different not only in the type of assessment and level of rigor, but in the fact that it tests standards from a full grade band (K-5 or 6-8), not just the year in which students take the assessment. At the high school level, no longer are there “end of course” exams; the NGSS assessment will test all students on all High School science standards.
